Traveling Man II

July 31, 2006

Well, we got to Sonora at about 12:15 am on Monday. Josh and I flew into San Francisco at about 3 pm. After picking up our oh-so-impressive Ford Taurus, we headed out on our journey.

Here is a listing of what we did:

  1. Stopped and took some photos of the Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir.
  2. Stopped at my grandmother’s house to check on her. She’s doing well, in case you were wondering.
  3. Went and got sandwiches at Togo’s Eatery, the sandwich shop of the gods.
  4. Went to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and got photos.
  5. Rolled up my pant legs and walked in the water. It was cold.
  6. Took some photos of a drunk homeless woman trying to button up the shirt of an ridiculously intoxicated homeless man.
  7. Took photos of people riding the wooden roller coaster.
  8. Left Santa Cruz and drove to Dublin for dinner. Matsu Sushi has good food.
  9. Left Dublin and drove to Sonora.

All told, we drove about 270 miles. It was a lot of travel, but it’s not like I haven’t done more than this in a day before.

Traveling Man

July 30, 2006

I had to think about the title of this post, as the word traveling could be spelling travelling, as well.  See here for details.  Well, I’m heading out to Sonora, California in the morning to do an installation of a new editorial system there.  I’m pretty hopeful that it’ll meet their needs, though a little nervous because I am the one who wrote it (MySQL/PHP/AJAX).  You know how you’re able to be critical of your own stuff, but don’t like it when anybody else is?  Yeah, well, that’s the way I feel about my code.  I know it’s not perfect, but I still get worried that other people will be rudely critical of it.  To say I’m stressed is to make an understatement.

Wish me luck!

So, I was lying in bed Wednesday night watching the news, minding my own business, when I heard a whole mess of sirens wailing about. Do I close the windows so the noise isn’t so loud? Heck no! I grabbed my camera and my clothes (stop picturing me without my clothes on) and ran off to see what was the matter. I hopped in the truck and headed out, hoping that I’d be able to track down the firetrucks. Sure enough, there was a ton of smoke visible in the night sky and it led me directly to the 20979 Greenmont Drive, which is about 7 blocks from my house.

By the time I got there, there were a ton of emergency vehicles on-site and the fire was mostly subdued. I managed to get some decent photos, however, with some smoke and fire in them.

I’m reminded of my days growing up in San Jose when I went scanner chasing with somebody from our ward (I think it was Dale Clark). We would listen to the scanner and then go to where the scanner said something was going on. I remember one time we were listening in while stopped at the intersection of Moorpark Ave. and Winchester Blvd. The people on the radio were saying that they had a person cornered in his car and they were approaching with guns drawn. As we looked out the window, we saw exactly what was being described on the radio. It was happening RIGHT IN FRONT OF US!! What were the chances of THAT!? Talk about exciting…

Hmm, tastes like muscle

July 22, 2006

So, Byron got out of bed this evening and came down to show us the wound that he has on the palm of his hand.  Apparently, a bunch of layers of skin got peeled off in a massive Razor Scooter pile-up / fender bender today in our driveway (details at 11 pm).  So, he came down to show us the pink skin that’s showing in the wound and was calling it muscle.  We politely corrected him and explained that there are many layers to the skin and that muscle really is a different thing entirely.  His reply?

“Well, David licked it and said it tastes like muscle.”

Okay then.

On Illegal Immigration

July 18, 2006

A bunch of states have pending bills that toughen penalties for different immigration violations, etc. There are number of them, but a couple stick out to me:

In Colorado, new legislation requires employers to show that new hires are in the country legally and makes it a felony for an illegal to vote.

and

… New Hampshire requires proof of citizenship to register to vote.

One of the great things about citizenship in the United States is that it comes with the right to vote. We citizens have the right to determine our destiny by voicing our opinion on a ballot. The idea that there may be some who disagree with this, and say that it shouldn’t be a felony to vote illegally, or that you shouldn’t need to provide proof that you’re a citizen to register to vote, is repugnant to me.

Lonely 911

July 14, 2006

This woman got her name in the news for trying to use 911 to get a date.  How embarrassing.
