Sold!
October 28, 2006
Well, we officially sold our Payson, Utah home on Wednesday. Our friend, Kimball closed on his purchase of it, and the my mortgage on the place has been officially paid in full. Now, I play the waiting game with regards to getting a check with my profits on it. It’s sad to see it go, but it’s a relief to no longer having to deal with renters for a property in another state.
17 Years
October 17, 2006
Today marks the 17th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. I was at my friend, David’s, house when it struck, and remember not being too worried when it started, but then it just wouldn’t stop. We all huddled in various doorways in the house in case things fell.
If I remember right, Mark (or maybe it was Kenneth) was playing a game on the computer and even made sure to save the game before running to the doorway. He ended up moving just a few seconds before a big bookcase toppled over and landed right where he had just been sitting moments before. A fish tank in Kristin’s room fell over and shattered, with all the water flooding her room and spilling down the wall directly above us in the doorway. We ended up taking the carpet out to the driveway, I think, and only found MOST of the fish that had been in the tank.
The power was out, so we all went out front with the radio to see what was going on around the Bay Area. We were getting reports that the Bay Bridge had collapsed* and that there was major damage at Candlestick Park**, where thousands were gathering for game 3 of the World Series. We also heard something about a freeway collapse in Oakland which had trapped a number of people.
I decided that it was time for me to go home because my family would be worried about me. Apparently, that wasn’t the case. Nobody was even there. I stayed there by myself, cleaning up the small mess***, for a couple of hours until people got home. There was no school the next day, for obvious reasons, and I don’t remember if we went to school the day after that.
Around the corner from my house, there was a house with a pool in the backyard. Apparently, the water from the pool splashed out pretty forcefully and destroyed a section of their backyard fence. I’m not remembering any more damage to my neighborhood, at this time.
* Early reports were talking about a collapse of the bridge, while it turned out that one upper deck section collapsed and damaged the lower deck section below it, causing some casualties.
** The damage to Candlestick Park wasn’t major, but I do remember going to Giants games that next spring and seeing where they had patched up a bunch of the concrete that had been damaged. In fact, it always intrigued me so every time I’d attend a game, I’d look for more spots where the damage had been repaired.
*** The small mess at my house involved an antique candy dish family heirloom falling and breaking. If I remember correctly, it had belonged to my grandmother’s grandmother, Lillie Mae Hunn Osgood, and had been passed to my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Helen Osgood Trost, then to my grandmother Eleanor Beverly Trost Taylor. I think about this now and how nice it would have been to have been able to passed it along to my daughter, Betsy, or my niece, Lauren. The only other mess at the house that I can think of was just a number of cracks that had appeared in the walls of the house, both interior and exterior. We also couldn’t use the fireplace for a while because we had to get it inspected for cracks.
Teaching, among other things
October 15, 2006
I taught my new Sunday School class today. I am the new teacher for the 16 and 17 year old kids in my ward. They seem like a really good bunch of people and I look forward to getting to know all of them a little better. One of the students got baptized tonight, too. When I went to the baptism, it made me think back to my own back in April of 1991. My goodness, so much has happened since then, almost half of my life has passed since. Would I trade any portion of what I have now for all of what could have been before? Not on your life.
Oh, I also ran 3/4 of a mile today on the treadmill. I’ve got to get some running shoes, as running in socks is kind of killer on the feet.
29 Again
October 14, 2006
Melanie had her birthday today. My mom is in town so she and I went and picked up a birthday gift for her in the shape of … a ProForm treadmill. Okay, yeah, it’s true. It’s also for me. It’s about time I relearn what that excer-something word is. We’ll see how THAT goes.
First Anniversary
October 8, 2006
Today is the first anniversary of the death of my uncle, Larry (Lawrence Marshall Bean). He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1951 to Marshall and Nancy Bean. Larry married my aunt, Carol in 1991, the same year that my cousin, Lauren was born.
I always liked Larry and I was definitely saddened to hear of his passing. I drove down to San Jose for his memorial service last October and am very glad that I did that.
What still pisses me off about it, though, is that my brother didn’t attend the memorial. The memorial was at 10 in the morning or so, and since my brother had worked until midnight the previous night, he couldn’t haul his lazy butt out of bed to go show some common courtesy to our aunt, Carol and cousin, Lauren. Seriously, he had enough time to get a full night’s sleep and still get up, but he didn’t. I drove all the way down from Oregon to go to this, but he wouldn’t get out of bed and go 10 miles to attend. What a joke.
Recovery
October 4, 2006
Betsy had her growth removed yesterday. Apart from a little crying when they stuck the needle in, she was pretty darn brave for somebody getting something cut off of her knee. The worst part for me was when I had to hold her leg steady to keep her from moving when they jabbed her. They cut the growth off and then had to burn/cauterize the wound to kill off the remaining cells that were at the base of it. The smell of burning flesh is pretty nasty …
