Uh … what?

This is one of those, “Did I read the headline correctly?” moments.

“Kansas Police: Woman Pried From Boyfriend’s Toilet After Sitting on It for 2 Years”

Unnecessary?

March 12, 2008

A woman left her child in her locked car for a few minutes, never going so far as to have the car out of her sight. Now she faces a trial.

Treffly Coyne was out of her car for just minutes and no more than 10 yards away.

But that was long and far enough to land her in court after a police officer spotted her sleeping 2-year-old daughter alone in the vehicle; Coyne had taken her two older daughters to pour $8.29 in coins into a Salvation Army kettle.

Minutes later, she was under arrest — the focus of both a police investigation and a probe by the state’s child welfare agency.

The police involvement all seems a little excessive to me.

Apparently, Britons are idiots and need to be protected from themselves.

People who have been injured while walking and texting on their cell phones may be in luck.

A London street is experimenting with padded lampposts to protect those not paying attention from banging into them, ITN reports.

Gallery

March 8, 2008

I have finally finished the first and second revisions of the Ausborne Gallery.  You can view them here and here.  I like the second one better than the first one.  Nate, Melanie and Kimball all liked it better, too, though it is a little too tall for 1280 x 800 screen resolutions.  My next project is a photo uploader.

I read this today about how Barack Obama’s senior advisor is blaming President Bush for Iran’s rabid hatred of America.

Barack Obama’s most senior military adviser says President Bush is to blame for Iran’s bad behavior.

This assessment provided to Insight from retired Gen. Merrill McPeak provides a glimpse into how an Obama administration would deal with Iran.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeatedly has referred to the ultimate destruction of Israel; is pursuing nuclear weapons in the opinion of some national security experts; and his Revolutionary Guard is training Iraqis to kill American military personnel in Iraq.

Just last week, Ahmadinejad said of Israel, “The world powers established this filthy bacteria, the Zionist regime, which is lashing out at the nations in the region like a wild beast.”

In the view of McPeak, the most senior retired officer to back Obama’s presidential run, Iran’s behavior is a reaction to Bush’s tough talk.

I suppose that the video I saw back when I was a kid of Iranians burning the American flag and chanting “Death to America” was just a figment of my imagination. Quite obviously, nothing bad ever happened until Bush became president.

Weather Related?

March 6, 2008

I’m having trouble seeing how this is a truly “weather-related” death.

MOUNT JULIET, Tenn. — High winds are blamed for the death of a man who died when a mattress he was sitting on was blown off the back of a pickup truck.

Police said Doyle Smith, 42, a public works employee, was helping move the mattress Monday.

The wind flipped the mattress and Smith fell and hit his head on the road. He died at Maury Regional Hospital.

Mount Pleasant Police Chief Tom Wilson said the death would be classified as weather-related.

Isn’t it more “stupidity-related?”

Southwest

March 6, 2008

Apparently, Southwest Airlines didn’t get their planes inspected on time.  Yeah, well, I’ll still fly SWA.  They’ve never lost a plane in a crash.

Southwest Airlines has never had a catastrophic crash. Federal investigators determined a 2005 incident at Midway airport in Chicago that killed one person on the ground was the result of pilot error, as was a 2000 incident at Burbank airport in California that seriously injured two passengers.

None of the big airlines can say that.

Break

March 4, 2008

Tonight, our Family Home Evening lesson was about the Plan of Salvation.  We were talking with the kids about where we came from, why we’re here and where we’re going.  We talked about how we lived with Heavenly Father prior to our time on Earth, and how we’ll return to live with him if we are obedient.  We asked the kids why Heavenly Father has us come to Earth to live out mortality.  Betsy’s response was, “Because he needs a break from us?”

FLYING TIP: Know when it’s time to pull up. When you’re getting blown off the runway while trying to land, that’s one of those times.

Beep Beep

March 2, 2008

So, we were sitting there in sacrament meeting today when we heard a single beep from some electronic device.  It captured the attention of each of us (except Ryan, who was in his own little world) because it was familiar sounding.  It sounded kind of like a blood glucose meter, like what Betsy uses numerous times each day.  When we heard two more beeps in succession, the source of the sound was confirmed.  We all looked around, trying not to be disruptive in doing so, to see if we could identify from where the sound originated.  Sure enough, we spotted a kid 4 rows behind us and on the other side of the chapel who had just finished checking his glucose.  We could see that he had a little tube running from his pocket to his waist, just like Betsy.

After sacrament meeting was over, we made sure to go over and introduce ourselves, as it’s not every day that we run into another kid with diabetes.  Betsy was so interested in seeing type of insulin pump he had, then telling him about the one that she has.  She was diagnosed at age 4 (sixteen months ago) and got her pump almost two months ago, so it’s still really new to her.   This 8 year old boy, however, was diagnosed shortly after his first birthday and has had a pump for years, so the novelty of it has somewhat worn off.  David was quick to befriend the boy and they went off to Primary, while Betsy, Melanie and I each got to know the boy’s parents.

Anyways, we just thought it was funny that the way that we found out about another kid in Primary with diabetes was because of the sound of the glucose meter in a (relatively) quiet church meeting.
