and counting …

May 4, 2008

So, I’ve been thinking about all of the cars that I’ve had in my life. It’s more than most other people my age, I think. Here’s the list:

  1. 1980 Datsun 200sx
  2. 1984 Mazda RX-7
  3. 1984 Mazda RX-7 (another one)
  4. 1990 Acura Integra
  5. 1996 Infiniti G20
  6. 1999 Nissan Maxima
  7. 1999 Nissan Maxima (another one)
  8. 1999 Ford Windstar
  9. 1994 Eagle Talon
  10. 1999 Honda Accord EX
  11. 1997 Ford Ranger
  12. 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Track
  13. 2003 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T
  14. 2005 Mercury Monterey
  15. 2004 Ford F-150
  16. 2004 Ford F-150 (another one)
  17. 2002 Honda Accord EX V6
  18. 1990 Toyota Camry (my Hooptie)

My favorites were the 1999 Honda Accord and the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta. The Honda was just a really nice car. It was black with a grey leather interior and was in terrific shape when I sold it. The reason I liked it better than the 2002 Accord is because it was the 4 cylinder instead of the 6 cylinder. It got a good deal better gas mileage than the 6 cylinder did. My 1999 averaged 26.76 miles per gallon, with a high of 33.83, while the 2002 averaged 22.55, with a high of 25.08. That means that the 2002′s high wasn’t even as high as the average for the 1999.

The Jetta was just so very very fun to drive. It had the 1.8 liter 180 HP engine and was boosted by the turbo. I couldn’t believe how well it cornered and handled. The downside is that it wanted the 92 octane fuel, so it was a little more expensive to fill. The mileage was decent, averaging 24.77, with a high of 31.7.

Did I mention that I just really like cars?

More Hockey

May 4, 2008

I’m watching the San Jose Sharks on TV right now, where they are in the intermission preceding the second overtime period. They are tied at 1 with the Dallas Stars, with the Stars up 3 games to 2. If the Sharks can somehow pull this off, they’ll head back to San Jose for game 7. This is an exciting game and the pressure sure is on.

UPDATE: Heading to the third overtime period. These guys must be exhausted.

UPDATE 2:  Heading to the fourth overtime period.

UPDATE 3:  Sharks eliminated.  I guess this means “Go Penguins.”

Two Games

May 2, 2008

I’m switching back and forth between two games of a lot of interest to me. First, we’ve got the NHL, where the Sharks have their backs to the wall, down 3 games to 1 in the best of seven series with the Stars. They’re at home tonight in game five and it’s currently 2-2 with 3:34 to play in the 3rd period.

The other game I’m watching is the NBA’s game 6 of the Jazz – Rockets series. The Jazz are playing at home tonight with a 3 games to 2 lead. The score is 80-61 with 3:07 to go in the 3rd quarter. Utah was up by 19 in the 2nd quarter, only to let Houston cut the lead to 1 point about 5 minutes later. That caused a little bit of concern, though it’s looking a little better now.

All in all, it’s an exciting sports night.

UPDATE: Sharks win 3-2 only 1:05 into the first overtime period!

UPDATE #2: Jazz win by a lot. 25 points, I think. Now, it’s on to Los Angeles so they can get smoked by the Lakers.  No, I’m not exactly confident of Utah’s chances in the next round.

What a Way to Go …

This guy probably had no idea that his death would make the national news.

Like many boys in the South, Sam White got hooked on the Civil War early, digging up rusting bullets and military buttons in the battle-scarred earth of his hometown.

As an adult, he crisscrossed the Virginia countryside in search of wartime relics — weapons, battle flags, even artillery shells buried in the red clay. He sometimes put on diving gear to feel for treasures hidden in the black muck of river bottoms.

But in February, White’s hobby cost him his life: A cannonball he was restoring exploded, killing him in his driveway.

Fond Farewell

May 1, 2008

I sold my car today. It is a 2002 Honda Accord EX with the V6 engine. The bad news is that the guy who bought it isn’t going to take care of it like I did. I guess I can take solace in the fact that I’m no longer paying money for the car. I’ll have this solace while I’m driving my 1990 Toyota Camry, which is almost as nice as the Accord, right?
