Remotely Restarting Windows Computers
June 4, 2008
This is so I don’t have to go searching for it the next time I need it.
The DOS command line built into every windows machine can be used to perform a lot of useful tasks. One very helpful task is shutting down your computer. By working your way through a few simple steps, you will find that you are able to easily shut down or restart your computer.
Steps
- Make sure you have an administrative rights on the remote machine and you can PING it.
- On your workstation – Click on Start > Run, Type shutdown -i
- select options to shutdown or restart
- Alternatively – Go to command prompt (start > run > cmd) on your workstation… and type shutdown -r -m \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx – Replace xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the IP address or computer name of the remote machine. -r option is for restart, don’t use -r if want to just shut down the system.
Tips
- Type shutdown -? for more options and control over shutdown command.
Warnings
- Works only for windows servers and workstations.
- Shutdown is not an inherent command in Windows Server. You need to install the Windows Server Admin Pack to get this functionality. Out of the box, this will not work.
Housing Update
June 3, 2008
I’ve been watching the real estate market here in Utah, and I started thinking about the home I mentioned back on 4/26. Well, I can’t say that I’m surprised to find that its listing expired and that it did not sell. They even dropped the price by about $5,000.
I’ve been watching a bunch of homes over the past three months and I’ve found that very few of them have sold. Of the five that have sold, two of them sold for more than $10,000 less than the final listing price, and those two homes’ final listing prices were at least $20,000 less than the first price at which I saw them listed. These homes are selling for less than 90% of original list price. I find this encouraging for me as we look for a home to purchase.
First Dental Visit

When Ryan visited the dentist for the first time in April, Melanie snapped a photo with her iPhone. Take a look at this little boy and tell me if he’s not the cutest thing.
