Housework and Trim

March 8, 2006

I’ve been so busy lately working on something very fun. I’ve found that I really like working on interior trim. In the master bedroom, I’ve wood-wrapped the two windows and installed wainscot-esque panelling throughout. The window wrapping and the main trim is all hemlock, and the panels are masonite. The only wood I still have to install is the chair railing (I do have one length completed) and baseboard. I’ll get the chair railing up by the end of the week and complete the spackling and sanding. I’ll do two coats of primer on the whole thing, then paint it all the final color of white. I’ve got some photos of the part that has the chair railing on, as I’ve already finished the primer, and they look pretty good. I think I’m doing a pretty good job of this, especially considering that I’m a geeky network administrator and I’m making all of this woodworking stuff up on the fly. Come to think of it, I’m doing a REALLY good job of this, and it’s REALLY fun.

I just remembered that I’ve also been building a handrail on the porch/deck out front. That, too, is very fun. I’d love to be able to spend a bunch of time each week doing this sort of work, whether it be for our own home, or in exchange for money. It would be quite flattering for somebody to see my work and ask me to do something for them. I’d get a big kick out of that.

Did I Mention …

February 19, 2006

… that it’s dang cold here? On Friday, it only “warmed” up to 13 degrees, and was down below zero at night. Yesterday, when I showed up at the home of some people who were moving into our ward, it was 15 degrees. Then, I was putting up some posts for the handrail on our porch at 8:30 last night when I looked over and saw that it was 5 degrees. Here’s a hint: When you’re out in temperatures that cold, don’t touch metal things to your bare skin. It kind of hurts when it sticks.
